Oh Deer!

Today I decided to disable the beep on my camera, right after this shot. This deer, about 30 yards away at the time, is actually looking toward the sound of my auto-focus beep. There are 3 more deer outside of the frame and they all took off after they heard the camera's shutter actuate. I can't make that any quieter but, at least by silencing the beep, I will be a little more quiet. Although it did seem to get this deer to say, "cheese!"

Tree Spirit

Some trees contain spirits, or demons, that express themselves in the shape that the tree adopts over time. The more dramatic the shape change, the more tormented the spirit.

The tree in this photo houses the spirit of an ancient wolf named Lykos. In the snow, near this tree, I have observed the tracks of a creature that leaves the footprints of a dog, but walks on only two legs.

Nearby residents say that it's not uncommon to hear the mournful howling of Lykos on cold, windy winter nights especially when there is a clear view of a full, yellow moon. These are good nights to remain indoors.

The Birds of Tom Sawyer Park

My first foray into the realm of bird photography. All photos, except the hawks, were shot on the same day when the temperature was less than 20 degrees F. It's tough getting a bead on those little flighty guys.

Not sure what those red things are, but the Robins sure seemed to enjoy them.

A Crow Speaks His Mind (in a bird-brained kind of way)

Nothing says "Halloween" quite like a talkative crow. Listen in as this crow tries to convince me to leave the area. Though in the beginning of the conversation he's all like, "Get OUT!" The conversation eventually turns to politics and the state of the economy. Basically he says the current situation is "for the birds". He even whines about it a bit at 00:43. Nothing sadder than a whining crow.

Lemon Slice

Kind of reminds me of a slice of lemon hanging there on the jewelweed.

Tattered

This butterfly shows signs of being worn out but is still out there looking good against a white sky.

Solitude

Wonder if they hear the wind rushing by...

Fiery Plant

Just really liked the colors of this plant. Could be a tree or a bush, I don't know what it is. It has large, 3 to 4 inch, spike-like thorns on trunk that would run fully through your wrist if you fell on it. I believe now that this is what's known as a Honey Locust tree.

Failing Infrastructure?

Makes one wonder what is holding those bricks up there. Above, a two lane neighborhood street conducts traffic in Anchorage, KY.

Welcome To Jurassic Park

In Jurassic Park, the local wildlife always has its eye on you. In this case, it is the butterfly population that needs to be cautious. The mantids lie in wait in the tops of ironweed plants for unsuspecting butterflies.

An almost futuristic appearance...

...especially in the head area!

Wise Guy

After flying right past me and nearly taking my head off, this owl perched on a nearby tree. I immediately started shooting photos of him/her and slowly walking closer to get a better shot. Though the owl looked around as if nervous, it stayed there as I inched closer and closer. Eventually, I was almost directly below it and it was about 10 feet above my head. It finally looked directly at me and I got this shot. Just after I took this, the owl turned around and shot a load of "owl juice" my way. It was as if it had been expecting me to continue sneaking up on it and it had planned to "bomb" me. A few moments later it flew away.

The exact location where this owl was photographed can be seen by the waypoint marker on the map below.

Robotic Bugs

There can be no denying that these guys are really alien scout ships. Note the metal construction of the body (fuselage) and "head" (cockpit). Note too the serrated jaws. Though not visible in this shot, the underside of this bug (craft) reveals a complex hydraulics package for driving the mechanized wings. The two dark orb-like windows at the front give nearly 360 degrees of vision to the pilots.

I, for one, welcome our new micro-robot overlords...
