Spot

My pet butterfly, Spot.

Hummingbird Moth

The first time one whizzed by my head, I was certain it was a bee. Then I saw it hovering by the purple thistle and I wasn't quite sure what the heck it was. It looked like the love child of a butterfly and a hummingbird. A quick search of google later, and I knew I was dealing with a hummingbird moth, Hemaris sp. It does seem to have antennae more befitting a moth than a butterfly. I believe there were two of them in the field that day but I have never seen even one of them before. I hope to see them again in the future.

The Drought Of 2012

It's so dry out there a man can almost hear the sound of his own skin rubbing against his powdery bones.

Old Hawk

Seems like one's lens is never quite long enough. Saw this old hawk in a tree but he flew away before I could get close to him.

Red Spotted Purple

Common in my area, this particular Red Spotted Purple butterfly has different coloring than most. Could it be because everything has been so dry? Normally these guys look more blue-iridescent and less black.

Red & Green

This plant looks like it will either cure you or kill you. I photographed it only because I liked the colors.

Painted Lady

Actually, this is probably a male Painted Lady. Tough break on the name, dude. This type of butterfly is a veritable cornucopia of butterfly colors.

Kwai Chang Kaine

The lesson of the grasshopper...

"- Old man, how is it that you hear these things?"
- "Young man, how is it that you do not?"

Serendipitous Deer

The other day I was out roaming around in the woods with my camera as I always do. I saw a very bright cardinal land on a tree limb out in the open. Since it is rare that cardinals expose themselves away from other branches, I was excited to get a chance at photographing this one. As I was focusing on the cardinal, the camera's auto focus was picking up some twigs in front of the bird and focusing on them instead of the bird. I moved the camera a little bit to avoid the twigs and this time the auto focus hunted too far to the rear and focused on the following scene instead. I had no idea a deer was there until I saw it through the lens. Talk about serendipity!

Spirit Deer

When we show our respect for other living things, they respond with respect for us.

Fatso

A rather fat Mockingbird, in the sticks, at Tom Sawyer Park.
